Dear Maharajas, Devotees and Matajis: Please accept our humble obeisances. All Glory to Srila Prabhupada. You may have heard of the Licencing Bill currently going through the UK Parliament, which under its current wording could result in a £20,000 fine and up to 6 months in prison for performing live music without a license. I had been under the impression that this law would only apply to pubs, but on closer examination, it seems to apply to any musical performance, and could therefore threaten any Hare Krishna meeting or street harinam. It would certainly not be unfeasable for a local council who disliked street harinam to use this law against Hare Krishna devotees, imprisoning devotees and fining individuals and ISKCON. I urge you to stand up for your rights to practice the religion of your choice, without the necessity to apply for a license to chant Hare Krishna, and without the threat of imprisonment and large fines! Your servant, Arjunanatha dasa ISKCON UK webservant [the following is forwarded] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.virtualfestivals.com/artists/article.cfm?articleid=385 if you enjoy LIVE music of any style whatsoever... sign the online petition fax your MP and get friends to do the same too! This is a sample don't copy it verbatim - it'll make you look as daft as me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR THE ATTENTION OF: Rt Hon Dai Havard MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney House Of Commons London SW1A 0AA Tuesday 28 January 2003 I Pritchard my address Dear Rt Hon Dai Havard, ... I recently read of a bill to be championed by Kim Howells. I am asking you on behalf of myself, my family and the valleys communities of Pontlottyn, Rhymney and Abertysswg where we have raised thousands of pounds in charitable events to make sure that you sign Early Day Motion 331 against this draconian bill which will greatly impinge on our enjoyment and way of life. I am deeply concerned that the Licensing Bill proposals to make the performance of live music licensable in pubs and clubs, in places where alcohol is served, in churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship, in schools and colleges, in community centers and village and parish halls, and in private homes and gardens where private parties and weddings may be held will have an enormously detrimental effect on musicians and live music performances; fears that the raising of money for charities by musicians will be seriously compromised; consider it will seriously impinge on the folk community including folk music and traditional folk activities such as morris dancing, wassailing, etc; believe that the penalties for breaking the law of a six month jail sentence of a £20,000 fine are far too draconian; consider it grossly unfair and inconsistent that live music will not be licensable in Scotland but will be in England and Wales; regret that the Government has decided to replace the anomalous two in a bar rule with a none in a bar rule which will catch all live music performances; believes that the requirement for the provision of entertainment facilities to become licensable which will ensnare music shops, music and dance studios and teachers, represents a totally unacceptable regulatory intrusion into mainstream activities; and calls on the Government to amend the relevant parts of bill in order to remove the iniquities faced by musicians and the music industry as a whole. Please support your community and we'll support you. Sincerely, Ian Pritchard
