Lords fall ill after ceremonial bath
Monday June 12 2006 09:25 IST

PURI: `Snan Purnima' (the ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra) was observed in the holy city with traditional style and grandeur on Sunday.

As per the rituals, the holy triads were escorted out of the `Ratna Sinhasan' from the sanctum sanctorum of the main temple by the `daita' servitors in the ceremonial `pahandi' procession.

At about 7 a m, the servitors escorted the deities to the bathing altar located at the outer temple complex amidst chanting of `Jai Jagannath' and the beating of drums, cymbals and `ghantas'.

The `pahandi procession' was over by 8.45 a m. After some minor rituals, the temple priests conducted the bathing ceremony of the deities at noon using 108 pitchers of aromatic and herbal water drawn from the golden well of the temple. The ceremony was completed by 1 p m.

Soon after the ceremony, the Gajapati King Divyasingh Deo came in a procession at 3.20 p m for the `chherapahanra' (broom the floor of the altar). Thereafter, the temple dressers decked up the deities for the `Hativesha'.

Devotees from various parts of the State thronged the city to witness the ritual. Late in the night, the deities were taken to the `anasar ghar' (sick room) where the three deities would be bed-ridden for 15 days, supposedly, suffering from fever.

During the fortnight, the temple `vaidya' (doctor) would treat them with herbal medicine while the deities will be served fruit as diet by the `daita' servitors.

Public `darshan' is not allowed. However, the devotees throng Alarnath temple, 23 km away from here as it is believed that during this period Lord Jagannath manifests in Lord Alarnath.

Meanwhile, massive police arrangements had been made in the city. Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, the DIG of Police and intelligence officials were present in the city to ensure safe and smooth conduct of the ritual.

The devotees were asked to pass through metal detector gates installed near the temple gates which were manned by armed police contingents. District Magistrate Aswiny Kumar Das and temple chief administrator Suresh Chandra Mohapatra had requested the servitors to conduct the rituals smoothly. No untoward incident was reported.
